We’ll be honest, when it was rumoured that Sony was bringing PS1 games to PS5 and PS4 as part of PS Plus Premium, we didn’t believe it. Then, when it was confirmed, we expected the absolute bare minimum. So, all credit goes to the Japanese giant for actually exceeding our expectations: rewind, upressing, and even some Trophies have been included. And now the games are beginning to release in Asia, we have even more details.
Like most modern emulators, there’ll be a variety of display options for PS1 titles. This includes the ability to play at native resolution, 4:3 for 16:9, and even stretched if you’re some kind of sinner. There are also a trio of filters you can apply, including Default, Retro Classic (which is effectively a CRT), and Modern. We’re not entirely sure what the last option is doing, but here are some comparisons from Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, as uploaded by BrokenSwiftie to Reset Era:
All in all, we’re pretty happy with the variety of options available here – it really does look like Sony has done a decent job. As mentioned in our Ridge Racer 2 screenshots story, we still need to see these games in motion to draw any firm conclusions, but things are looking pretty good so far.
